8. Hi Tony,
I will get some extra and original material on the L48 for you early next year and perhaps when our new website is up,we can sort out some cross-referenced links? Meanwhile, local people and all other visitors to your site can still obtain copies of our L48 book post free from www.windsockdatafilespecials.co.uk whilst stocks last. There is an order form on our site.We are publishing another Zeppelin book next year and at least three more after that. One will be about the Height Climbers and features more data on Theberton's L48 and her sister ships.
Best wishes,
Ray.
Thanks Ray..looking forward to the new stuff..have put in the link to your site. T.P.
9. We thoroughly enjoyed your well organized 'Parish Council' website, particularly the sections on history and picture gallery.
Included in the "Theberton Villagers" picture, we clearly recognize our dearest friends, Brenda and Ken .
We were awed by the few pictures of the interior of St. Peters. We look forward for any subsequent views of that sanctuary and will continue sampling the website greedily.
Sincerely,
Dr. & Mrs. George Hassard,

Thankyou for your kind comments..I will try to post more photos of St.Peter's. T.P.

A marvellous website, well done to all concerned in its construction. I came to Theberton in 2006 as part of the team that excavated the Zeppelin L48. The village is delightful and everyone we met was so friendly. It was a great privilige to come to your village, not in the least that it is so beautiful and reminds one just what England is all about. I do hope to return sometime to see Ken and Brenda with whom I share a passion for all things historical and also metal detecting. I hope the forthcoming book on the excavation brings desired benefits and recognition to the village as a whole.
Regards to all

The book "In Search of the Zeppelin War" Tempus Books will be reviewed on the History page when it is published Jan/Feb 2008

Thanks George. The iron-ore carrier Mangara was torpedoed and sunk with one dead in the FIRST World War.July 28th 1915 400 yards East of the Sizewell Buoy off

Thanks Tony Preston for aligning the pictures of sanctuary, St. Peter's Church, Theberton which I requested on 12/26/07. I see in todays Parish Council and St. Peters section, the church is in the throes of fundraising for certain structural repairs. Reverand Canon Richard and Vicar Ann are mentioned with telephone numbers but the e-mail addresses are not included. If such could be in your next Parish Council reporting, I would happily donate to that cause in the name of my dearest Theberton friends.
Thanks again.

Dear George. Thanks so much for your kind message and generous offer. It would be most welcome. You can contact Annie on the direct email link I put in,on St.Peter's page just by clicking on the blue words Email Annie [or where it says Email Richard] as elsewhere on the site
where there is the symbol, the next words in blue are Hyperlinks..i.e. direct email links. Tony P
16.Hi.We really enjoy your website, especially the photos,as we used to holiday in the area in the 60s and 70s.We loved the "Then and Now" images on the History Page.Do you have any more please? Norman Baggot.Ely.Cambs. 15/03/08.
Thanks Norman..yes,in the coming months I will put on a lot more as they have been very popular.I am also building up photos for a "Walk through the Village" showing both places as they are now.Tony P.
17. Just to say thanks for such a fantastic website. It is better than many big towns. Thanks so much for the gen. on the Zeppelin. My grandfather watched it burn and I've been fascinated by it ever since and really enjoyed the books you put me onto.Any chance of more old photos? Peter Moskovita. Arles. France. 17/03/08.
Thanks Peter.Try the e-book "Dawn after Dark" by Mark Mower[See History Page] for a different insight into it...more of a Dramatized Documentary approach. I've had so many requests about the L48 that I'm setting up a section on the History page to put a Photo of the Month just for the Zeppelin..with longer captions...watch this space! Tony P.
18. Greetings.I'd like to echo the praise just posted about your site and the Zeppelin but also about the "Yoxford Boys" and the books you mentioned about them. Are there any more?and can we have more photos of the Mustangs?PLEASE!!My grandpa worked on Leiston Airfield. James G Goodritch."The Big Apple".N.Y. U.S.A. 18/03/08
Thanks Jim.I've emailed you the book details.Sadly Merle Olmstead passed away on Jan 6th.His are the definitive books and he was the major force in keeping the memories alive. I will be doing the same thing..i.e. publishing a Photo of the Month on
the History page just for the 357th...they are all copyright, but I'll post them and see what happens!! T.P.

Just returned from our annual fortnight in your lovely village. We stayed in the brand new Lion Lodges instead of camping this time. Many thanks to Caroline & Michael from the Lion Inn for treating us like family rather than customers. Hope to see you all later in the year.

Hello, Theberton PC,
Just to let you know that Peakhill Farm has a new web site address, www.peakhillfarm.co.uk
Do you think you could update the details on your site please.
Also when you google 'Theberton' you don't get the website in the
listing. instead you get 'onesuffolk.co.uk'.
Lastly I noticed that Doughty and the Zepplin get mentioned in facts
about the village but not Lady Eve.
Hope that helps.
Warm Regards
Robert White (Peakhill Farm)
05/11/08
Thanks Robert.I've amended the link. The site IS there, amongst countless others BUT if you add "and" or "and Eastbridge " it is number 1 on the list.[onesuffolk is our host site] to get directly to us just type " www.theberton.suffolk.gov.uk " it goes into the site.
I have posted photos of Lady Eve Balfour on the History page for December 2008 plus a linked article about her involvement with the Soil Association and the Organic Movement..thanks for your help with that. T.P.

Hello Tony.I've really enjoyed the photos/articles on Doughty-Wylie on the History pages but I think that the lady captioned as Gertrude Bell, his mistress in one of the photos is in fact his wife Lilian.
Jamie Bruce-Lockhart.Middleton.

Thanks again Jamie.I think you might be correct as you are the second person to suggest this, so I have amended the caption suitably.T.P.

Hi , Jan Wharton from New Zealand . I haven't been to Suffolk as yet but will be making the trip in 2009. On searching Google Books for Jones I find a Colonel Jones @Theberton Hall 1820. Unfortunately it wasn't able to be downloaded .
My family I believe come from Jones of Woodhall and Long Melton .
My ggggreat grandfather Major Charles Jones b.1783 of the 15th Hussars was Aide de Camp to the Duke of Cumberland in 1817.
I wondered if there is anyone on your site that could correspond with me and point me in the right direction . I have a 1837 diary entry from Charles son Ernest Jones Chartist that suggests his father first married into the Lord Braybrook family and his bride was a neice of the Provost of Eaton .(names unknown )
I have been unable to confirm any of this . thank you for any help. Jan Wharton .13/12/08
Hi Jan.I have emailed you 2 links about his famous son Ernest Jones, the famous Chartist and poet who was born when the family were in Holstein. No local link so far! Tony Preston.
23. Hello,
I thoroughly enjoyed your article on Charles Doughty-Wylie V.C whose existence I learned of when researching the letters and photographs of Gertrude Bell. Mr Bruce-Lockhart is correct in identifying Lillian, rather than Gertrude, as the lady standing with Charles in the photograph displayed. It was taken in May 1907 in Konia (Konya), Turkey, is captioned “The Doughty-Wylies in the Consulate Gardens” and was actually taken by Gertrude Bell.
Congratulations on a very informative website, it is a great advert for your lovely parish.
Best wishes, Tracey Mackenzie. Brighton 26/02/09
Thanks for that Tracey, & I'm glad you enjoyed the website. Tony Preston.

Lovely web site. Very informative. Does anyone know the story of L C Cooke mentioned on the War Memorial. I was fostered by Mr and Mrs Cooke who lived in the Old Manor House. This was their only son who was tragically killed when in the Air Force. Does anyone also know what happened to Mr and Mrs Cooke. A lovely couple. Have very fond memories of going to Theberton Church and school. I remember how the pigs from Old Manor house used to uproot the fences and trot across the road to the Chuch.
Lovely village. Lovely people. Pam R Essex. 29. 05.2011.
Thanks Pam.can anyone please help?

Found this website whilst looking up information about the Eels Foot. My grandfather, Henry Gower, was a gamekeeper , presumably for Scotts Hall, and lived in a single storey cottage with a corrugated tin roof at Westleton. I think the exact location of the cottage is now inside the reserve and the cottage itself has gone, although it would be good if someone could prove me wrong on this,as I would love to see it. My grandmother, Mary aka Mabel, would walk up the beach to Leiston to go shopping. When the family first moved there she & her daughters (Jessie & Connie) cried because the place was full of mosquitoes. I believe this was shortly after the second world war. Grandad drank in the Eels Foot and loved to join in with the singing. My mother played the piano there on the odd occasion, when she was visiting her in-laws. Grandads employment was terminated after he shot a marsh harrier, thinking that it was a hawk after the pheasant chicks. Some visiting bird watchers witnessed it & reported him, so that was that. I have a photo of the cottage, with my grandmother, my father & his brother , standing outside. It must have been very noisey when it rained!

I'm trying to find details - if there are any - of a local folk tale concerning lucky clay bells hung in houses to protect against evil spirits. There is a probable link to the ruin on the Minsmere marshes and a strong possibility of a connection to Eastbridge. Do any of your residents have any memories or stories relating to this or something similar? I am helping my daughter with her research into Suffolk folk tales for a book she will be writing.
All related tit bits gratefully received.

Can anbody please help ?? T.P.
27 Many thanks for such an interesting and friendly website. I have a few old photographs of Theberton and it's inhabitants, if you think they could be of interest to you let me know. There is one of the old windmill which was on the land at the back of the Eels Foot, the mill itself is now at the Stowmarket Museum of Rural life which you probably already know. Another shows some old cottages, now long gone in a similar area. A few old family pictures - one in particular is of a wedding and shows several of the Lumpkin and Rouse families. Which reminds me, the lady who said she couldn't find the Lumpkins on the census in the 1800's............for some reason the family decided to call themselves Todd at one time, and they will be found on the census under the surname Todd - don't ask, it's a long story!
